Peter,

One solution is to run Veritas Cluster. It is equipped to fail Oracle over to another member of the cluster. That is, if Oracle fails on the current cluster member it is automatically restarted on another cluster member. Of course, any sessions will be killed and need to be reconnected. Uncommitted database changes will be lost. If you have a server-based application that also runs on the server, this is especially advantageous. VCS can handle dependencies so the application and Oracle can be automatically managed with a dependency tree you've defined. VCS is just an example, other products are available.

If your boss has been talking to the hardware people, this may be the sort of solution he has in mind. Usually database people consider a database-centric solution to problems and hardware (or O.S.) people consider a hardware-centric solution.
