I would agree that general business skills and business knowledge are very important to a DBA.

When you work with developers it helps to have a general idea of what the systems being worked on do in order to determine if the code and queries meet the business requirements behind the request.

The ability to communicate effectively never hurt anyone either.

Patience is another skill that helps. As a DBA you are often in the position of trying to safeguard the database from the conflicting demands of management, the developers, and the end-users. The ability to remain clam while repeatedly explaining real world restrictions and database usage limitations to people who do not want to listen is a saving grace.

A lot of folks have commented about knowing programming languages and hardware and all the IT stuff. That is all good and helpful, but what I've found most helpful is my ability to work with those outside of IT
