Thanks for your answer.

To cut things short, the main problem was with the CSS daemon not being brought up, which caused the ASM instance startup to fail....

This was known when I raised the SR.

On RAC the CSS daemon is brought up by CRS (I think) and the issue doesn't exist.

I worked Good Friday and debugged this. Support suggested using SMF to manage the CSS daemon startup, and that seems to have ironed out problems with the startup.

However, the shutdown problem still exists, it appears that the CSS daemon is brought down before the database shutdown scripts are run. dbora is still managed via standard init, softlinks rc3.d/K01 and rc3.d/S99.

I have found the following URL which should theoretically work.

http://joostm.nl/ora-smf/

However I don't have time to apply this. I have placed this issue back in Oracle Support's capable hands, and asked how to "SMF enable" database startup and shutdown.

Regards.

Since you are using ASM, it needs to be up prior to the database services starting. The configuration I have is for a RAC enviornment. On testing system reboot, all services come up without any problems - of course the environment I have differs from yours. Why not start initially with having ASM boot up automatically, check the system logs for startup and the asm alert log - are there any messages being logged if so what are they?

Oracle Support, which originated on 23 Oct 2006. We did get the automatic startup working, but not the shutdown.

problem, however, it has brought me back to square 1, no auto startup, and no auto shutdown. Orcale Support seem to be dragging their feet on this matter, I get the feeling that they do not have the solution.
