No extra risk with rman that I'm aware of. Turn the controlfile autobackup option on and the separate backups will be taken for you automatically and in a special format that makes it very easy for rman to locate the backup with no prior knowledge of it.

is there a bigger risk when using rman in anyway?  

Do I need to make seperate backups of the control files since I would be using RMAN without the recovery catalog?
