Yes AWR does keep the explain plans - check dba_hist_sql_plan (or just look at it through the DB Console/Grid Control GUI), and yes it could've helped for last month, assuming you set your AWR retention appropriately. IIRC, it defaults to only 1 week, but I bumped mine up to 45 days specifically for the purpose of covering monthly queries.
