Since nobody has responded to your question, I'll provide a couple of
comments and maybe one of the real experts will weigh in.
- Yes, it certainly sounds as if you've overcommitted the memory on your
system and adding more RAM should be in order.
- Is the swap space correctly configured on your server? You statistics for
real and virtual memory usage sound unusual.
- Predicting the amount of memory per session was a topic recently
discussed on this list. The way I would tend to approach it would be to
calculate the average memory per session of your current sessions. This
approach assumes that your sessions use memory in a predictable fashion. If
their use of memory varies all over the place, then your mileage may vary.
If, for example, a couple of the current processes are real memory hogs and
you don't foresee any more of them, then you might take them out of the
average. Maybe someone else has a better idea.
- Be sure to argue for more memory than anticipated. Running out of memory
causes a lot of strange problems.
