Anurang,

Since nobody has responded to your question, I'll provide a couple of comments and maybe one of the real experts will weigh in.

  1. Yes, it certainly sounds as if you've overcommitted the memory on your system and adding more RAM should be in order.
  2. Is the swap space correctly configured on your server? You statistics for real and virtual memory usage sound unusual.
  3. Predicting the amount of memory per session was a topic recently discussed on this list. The way I would tend to approach it would be to calculate the average memory per session of your current sessions. This approach assumes that your sessions use memory in a predictable fashion. If their use of memory varies all over the place, then your mileage may vary. If, for example, a couple of the current processes are real memory hogs and you don't foresee any more of them, then you might take them out of the average. Maybe someone else has a better idea.
  4. Be sure to argue for more memory than anticipated. Running out of memory causes a lot of strange problems.
