storing AWR data for extended periods of time

We talked about storing AWR data for 3 months to as long as 18 months. There is some concern that this might increase contention on the SYSAUX tablespace. We talked about copying the data over to another schema/tablespace every 7 days and setting the retention to 7 days. Has anyone does this? Is there a need to do this?
