RE: dbms_stats.auto_invalidate

Just a guess - I really have no idea, but it seems that it would make sense to compare the new stats to the previous stats and invalidate only if the new stats differ by some certain percentage or more. You might be able to get some insight with a 10046 trace on the dbms_stats procedure.
