I can't comment on the merits of Chris' suggestion, other than saying that it sounds plausible to me. If it is then it is worth bearing in mind that in v10 you probably actually don't need to find the name of the index but you can use /+ INDEX TABLE_NAME(COLUMN_NAME) */
