I didn't think you could back up the database flashback logs at all. Anything else which is in there - e.g. if you use the FRA for archivelogs - can be backed up to disk with RMAN, using a format path - e.g.  

CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/tmp/%U';

One major drawback I see with it, is that you can only backup that area with RMAN, and ONLY TO TAPE. So any backup-to-disk-to-tape strategies have to be adjusted for this. Let alone, various software used for backup (Enterprise level) doesn't support backing that up yet. ( i.e. HP Data Protector).

AFAIK it's only necessary for the flashback database feature, flashback query, flashback table and the new transaction undo feature still use UNDO, and the also-new Recyclebin.
