Book review of a book by Fred Cohen that looks interesting in terms of motivations: http://asp-press.com/1-878109-36-7/FSL-review.pdf (Also reviewed in Saturday's www.risks.org )

My observation is customers barely feel qualified to do the work they are doing, much less something new. But they rarely want to admit that unless they are looking for more information on what they are doing. An exception might be if they are listening to someone they consider to be a superstar, and that person gets them thinking it might be cool to do the new thing.
