You might want to check out: http://safari.oreilly.com/

gives you a chance to read books (via a subscription) from a variety of publishers, including many Oracle titles, before commiting to buying the book. IME it works well as a 'try before you buy' sort of thing, see if the book has what you need and that you get on with the style.

Obviously you can also use sample chapters on Amazon, where they have them, in a similar way. Google Print (http://books.google.com/) has sample chapters of some books, although mostly just table of contents and index.
