I tried to use VMware Server (free beta) on Windows host and shared storage based on files is not possible as vmware locks it. Don't know if in Linux it works.
However, shared device based on separate disk drive works just fine - I was experimenting with it trying to get two nodes Oracle RAC on Solaris 10.
