Manual mem management in 10g

I'm seriously considering turning off the automated memory management in 10gR2 because of fragmentation, complaints I've seen on this list and support's inability to give me a decent solution to our problem (4030 crashes every few weeks). We run a pretty plain vanilla server so I don't need the auto adjusting. We need the stability back we had in 8i.

Is manual mem tuning in 10g the same as it was in 8i? Are there any new "features" I need to be aware of/concerned about? Can I simply duplicate the values we were using in 8i before upgrading to 10g (or is Oracle like Windows, which needs more mem with each release)?
