Alessandro,
I did this at the beginning of the year. Technically, you need to be 8.1.7.4 to be a supported direct upgrade. We were 8.1.7.3 like you. I don't recall any real issues that came up. We had to do export/import because we needed to do some "tweaking" in the dump file to reduce some column sizes. You will likely find note 316889.1 helpful.

I did run the upgrade information tool script just to make sure there was nothing it didn't like. You'll need to modify it to accept an 8.1.7.3 db though to get it to run.

My biggest challenge was learning how to setup a standby server in 10g. I still haven't gotten to test it yet (!) but in theory it should work if we needed it.

We did test the actual upgrade process several times and tested our apps against the test 10gR2 server.

We've been having 04030 errors every few weeks that drop the instance. The old server (we moved to a new 2003 one at the same time) had less mem and we've not been able to narrow down the issue yet (see my other threads). Other than that, everything is fine.
