As others have suggested, Cary's book it the most thorough treatment of profiling.

For shorter, less thorough, articles (which you could read in an afternoon, just to get started), google for articles describing the use of tkprof. Below are links to some articles authored by colleagues of mine:

tkprof is not as nice as Hotsos's Profiler, but it comes with Oracle, and it's a good way to get started.
