Hi Uwe,

It depends on the OS/Clustering Platform. There are a lot of platform centric Interconnects and these generally provide much better latency than the traditional gigabit ethernet.

For.e.g HP - Hyper Fabric Interconnect, Veritas- LLC, Sun-RSM

Most of these interconnects use a propreitory protocol. Oracle recommends to use UDP based protocols only.
