We're using Redhat Enterprise Version 3. Don't know why that one was picked.

What version of Linux?

I do believe that the 2.6 kernel has better IO performance than the 2.4 kernel.

If you're on 2.4, I'd try and upgrade to 2.6 and see if that makes any difference.
