It seems to me that as long as there have been relational databases, there have been two statements:

I happened to scan the Oracle Education Oracle9i Performance Tuning Class Notes, and they mention this as a fact. They also pointed out that this can occur when somebody implements an object-oriented design in a relational database. So I don't think this issue will disappear anytime soon.
