I am very fond of Korry & Susan Douglas: PostgreSQL, a comprehensive guide to building, programming and administering PostgreSQL database. It's well written, with an absolute beginner in mind. It is about PgSQL 7 but it is still relevant. Published by Developer's Library. I will never confess, like Dick Goulet did, in an article published on /., using it and reading about it.
