Morning Jon,

does this help ?

SQL> column col1 heading 'this is what the supplier wants - a very long heading indeed'

SQL> select rpad(dummy, 60) as col1 from dual;

this is what the supplier wants - a very long heading indeed

X

At least this way you can exceed the 30 character limit encountered when doing it like this :

SQL> select rpad(dummy, 60) as "this is what the supplier wants - a very long heading indeed" from dual

                          *

ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00972: identifier is too long

No the only problem is, does your reporting tool let you do SQL*Plus commands like 'column' ?

Cheers,
Norman.

Thanks Dennis, Mark, & Igor for the responses ...

The instance in question is 8.1.7
Our reporting system:

So, the vendor will have to settle for 30 characters. I wonder which 30 they'll choose ... hmmmmm.

Thanks for the effort.
