 Michael has a good point. The other major factor where commit=y is used is the buffer= parameter. I hope you are not importing using the default but have specified something like buffer=1048576 or larger

What are the columns in your table? Unless new versions have changed some column types would cause a commit=y to automatically commit every single insert.
