PGA memory per user

At present we are upgrading our database to 10.2.0.1 from 8i, and we are experiencing issues regarding memory used by each user session connected to the database. The memory used per process has increased by over 60%. Is this common , we are using pga_arregate_target are there any other parameters we can use to decrease the amount of memory is used and not effect performance?
