the problem is, senior managers are the targets of this marketing hype and buy into it at face value. they believe oracle is unbreakable. they believe linux is free. and they believe 10g will render DBAs dinosaurs. If we learn how to articulate the facts, we're in a better position to squelch the hype. If you are fortunate enough to work for a company whose management exercises measured independent thought, then Nuno's advice is good. If you work for a company whose management makes decisions based on what the guy in the seat next to them on the plane says, better start doing your homework.

Keep in mind that those who decide to outsource are not so savvy with what DBAs do anyway. They understand the bottom line but don't understand the mechanisms of a recovery, especially if you've been able to maintain a system such that it has never needed a recovery. Why buy flood insurance when it never floods?

IT managers are no different than any other manager. it's easy to understand why federal and state officials bought into the notion that they don't need to spend all that extra money to build a really decent levee. they were told a cat 5 hurricane will never hit directly, right? why spend all that extra money on worthless DBAs? the system will never crash anyway. oracle is flawless. third pary apps are flawless. The OS is flawless. just outsource your services and go play golf.

to paraphrase the response michael abbey of Oracle gave to this very same question, you better know how to make yourself valuable because if you assume management understands your significance, you'll soon be out of a job.
