Doug,

Nagios is pretty good. You write a script to do the monitoring and it 'just works'.

I've read in Sys Admin magazine that it is probably the most popular monitoring tool.
Open Source too.

You do your monitoring via a browser from anywhere. Nothing needs installing on the PC you want to monitor from.

There are plenty of downloadable modules to do the monitoring for you, or write your own to customise it to your location.
