Just kidding, but really what you are saying is that you would like Detailed Sophisticated Oracle monitoring and alerting (and not just a dashboard tool).

You have 3 options;
Build it, Configure it, or Find it already built.

• Build it; Write your own scripts. I'm sure from this list you could get a lot of individual scripts that do many things individually well, but they would be a collection of shell, perl, SQL, etc.
• Configure it;

Again, from what little I know these are really; "Scheduling, Parse, Display" tools...they schedule jobs, pares output, and display (direct) results (that could be said for

any monitoring tool).
The key being that *you* have to write or find good code that will generate logical *AND* valid output to parse. This flexibility is both a negative and a positive and I think Norman did a great job of explaining all of this regarding Nagios.

*Generally* I have seen that Monitoring tools/script NOT written by DBA's fall way short. Is the database up? "ps -ef | grep smon"...I don't think so, but again "Configure it" monitoring tools give you the power/responsibility to write good/valid "check" code.

• Find it; There are some "Oracle Monitoring and Alerting" tools written by and for the Oracle DBA, but I'm not sure one dominates...I guess OEM?

Personally, after finding frustration with OEM,my own individual scripts, and the non-availability/restrictions of other tools built my own.

Over the last 3 years I have been working on my own "Oracle Monitoring & Alerting" program called "HEYMONitor". HEYMONitor keeps me well informed about what bad things are happening to the database when I'm not looking at it. I have used it myself for two different clients and works very well. HEYMONitor is very Oracle centric both in design and use, but your an Oracle DBA, so that is good! ;o)

It already has the ability to monitor db; space, sessions, jobs and many other things, and send email about all of this...you

just have to install it. HEYMONitor™ can Monitor & Alert for Oracle PROCESSES, DATABASE, and LOG FILES.

I'm a full time DBA and part-time (barely-time) developer...I have not been able to update HEYMONitor for about a year. So HEYMONitor has a couple of small issues and a lot I would like to add or modify. But again I rely on it everyday and am able to know the availability of my databases.

However, you can not change or add to HEYMONitor, it is what it is. This is the Nagios advantage, but again you don't have to write a "DBMS_JOB" monitoring script for HEYMONitor...you just have to turn it on for your database. In the future I plan to update and enhance HEYMONitor, but at the same time provide un-"wrapped" PL/SQL code you everyone who wants to (help) change things can.

Have a look for yourself, but ultimately you have to decided what is best for your skill, time, and environment;

A colleague here is setting up a database, weblogic, apache and probably Unix server monitoring system using Nagios (www.Nagios.org I think) which runs on a Linux PC (Windows is possible too, as are other Unixes) with assorted plugins to monitor just about anything.

Most of our work is done without installing anything on the monitored servers - whihc we like - but to monitor Unix disc space, I believe a daemon is required.

Oracle testing at the moment is simple, is the listener running ?, is the database up?, what are the percentages used on the tablespaces in all the production databases with a warning at 80% and a critical alert at 90%. It works.

The DBAs get emails for Oracle problems, the WebLogic gurus get WL alerts, and so on. Maintenance slots can be assigned so that alerts don't go out during those hours and alerts can be acknowleged to indicate that we know about this problem, please don't alert me again. Etc etc.

We are running perl DBI modules, but you can run shell scripts, C programs etc. It's such a nice system, I'm starting to look into it at home for future use on other contracts - if needed.

The output is on a web browser, so can be viewed from anywhere and there are authorised users and different views depending on which group you are in.

My colleague raves about it, has used it in past contracts at very large world wide companies with on and offshore support etc and from my own experience of it, slightly brief, it looks fine. If there is anyhting missing, just write a script and add it in !
