I would not update to that version of the kernel. I'd update to the newest one for RHEL 3 which I believe is 2.4.21-32.0.1

The method I'd use to do it is...

up2date -f kernel
up2date -f kernel-smp

then verify that you have the correct default in the /etc/grub.conf file.

reboot.
