Rich,
I'll join you on the blasphemy here. We mount our admin under $ORACLE_BASE (typically /usr/oracle), and our $ORACLE_HOME(s) under $ORACLE_BASE. Usually each application on a shared server will have it's own $ORACLE_HOME. Our datafile location (/oradata) is never mounted under $ORACLE_BASE. Keeps them nice and tidy in their own little/large playground.
