Hello Frank,

Yes, I considered this. The list is not a replacement for internet access.
I understand not anybody has metalink. However, netiquette/general list guidelines are pretty explicit in doing your homework before bothering a list.

This isn't the first time Deepak asked the list for answers he could find easily himself. Just look at the VERY URGENT thread of this week. He got the google hint in that thread as well. He did not reply about failing internet access. He seems not to listen very well to hinds regareding netiquette. That's why I think my reply was appropriate in this occasion.

Besides, I replied Deepak with some more hints off-list, after he replied with apologies to me off-list.

I had exactly the same question from a junior DBA at a customer's site this week. It appeared Oracle got installed, and then patched. After that a database was 'created' using dbca, choosing a seed database from the install media. This needs to be patched by then.

It boils down to insufficient reading of the doc's and readme's that accompany the patch. We all suffer from unpacking devices and start using them, the same applies to software installs and patches: 'if nothing works, then read the manual'. I would add: 'If the manual doesn't give a clue, search Google, and then post to a list'

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Carel-Jan
