IMHO, Oracle (as well as other vendors) will comply with standards when the database market actually desires it. Currently there are several vendors who each implement there own dbms with their own proprietary advantages and shortcomings and I personally like many of the cases where Oracle explicitly does not comply with the standard as I believe the standard to insufficient or incorrect; I will not go into the list of features as I believe this is a matter of taste to which there is no arguing (right or wrong). If all the database vendors wrote just to standard and nothing more/nothing less than what would be the point in having more than one vendor?

I like that each vendor tries to out do all the other vendors, which leads to additional feature beyond the standard and eventually to better products, and if we had to wait for new standards to come prior to a vendor implementing new features, we'd all be waiting a very long time and many of the features that we rely on today would never exist.

If a person doesn’t like the way a particular system works then he can choose a different one, plain and simple. And if you believe that a there is a strong enough market need for a dbms that complies with all standards, start your own and see if everyone flocks to it. The fact that one doesn't exist today and that people spend billions of dollars on the current products leads me to believe that the current vendors are on the right track.

No, but does it matter? What bugs me is that Oracle shows no sign of wanting to comply eventually.
