I agree.
I run Fedora Core as my desktop o/s - after it has been hacked (and rpm's downgraded and compat rpm's installed) to get Oracle to work. If one is comfortable with that and accept the consequences of that (especially when testing new Oracle stuff that may simply not work at all on a uncertified platform), then go for it.
It would however be prudent to instead use an Oracle certified Linux distro. That provides a valid platform for testing - and using as a testbed for resolving problems and filing Tars.
As for the the features/options/sofware that one needs? Nothing more than:
- KDE konsole (for running vi and SQL*Plus) - firefox (Oracle manuals) - ssh & vnc (remote support) - grip & xmms (to keep the urge to beat the crap from HUAOD's*, with alead pipe, to a minimum ;-)
