Where did you get the $5k figure for external storage?  The server sounds about right. In my (limited) experience, I have not seen a figure that low for external storage of 1TB.

We're using a Dell CX-300 SAN (15 x 146GB drives). I don't have a figure for the cost for this configuration, but recently got a quote for a similar SAN unit from Dell for $22k (CX-300 SAN 15 x 320GB). This included a 2 year support contract.

If you want to share the storage between mutliple nodes, I believe you'll need to put a fibre channel switch in place for the 4-nodes which will possibly add another $5k-$6k (our quote for an 8-port switch).

Sounds similar to the direction that we'd like to go to aswell.
