        Try to understand the whys instead of just using rules of thumb.

        This specific advice comes because RAID 5 is just as great for reads as striping, but lousy for writes.

        So one could put it another way: use RAID 5 if your need to $ave is greater than your need for (write) speed, 10 otherwise.
