The problem is that the client will not fund the upgrade, as the system is going to be merged into another system which has 9.2.0.6 database in about six months time.

Although 8.1.7.4 doesn't support large memory, won't the imagecfg.exe utility help here? Maybe it won't, but I would like to try it once.
