Hi John,

Thanks for your reply . As you said , ONLY step 1 can be done well ahead. But step 2 - 5 is part of the upgrade phase. i need to start the instance from this new oracle_home and then run catpatch/utlrp to get it upgraded to 9.2.0.6.

  1. Install 9201 binaries alone in new oracle_home (do this well ahead)
  2. shutdown the existing instance
  3. copy init.ora & other files in dbs directory (of old oracle_home) to new oracle_home
  4. change the oracle_home in oratab to new one
  5. change the ENV variables to point to new oracle_home
  6. startup the instance in "startup migrate" mode
  7. run catpatch.sql & utlrp.sql
  8. shutdown/start

I can proceed as mentioned above in my original mail. Am i right ? Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Many thanks to Les,Mark,Zhu,Dimitre for your inputs.

Regards,
Prem.
