be careful, though --
STATISTICS_LEVEL behaves pretty much as a "main switch" for many 10g features. you might inadvertently disable more features than desired ...

You need to set the statistics_level=basic in the init.ora or spfile. This will disable the automatic statistic gathering feature of 10g.
