Unless you've got incredibly fast tape drives and your network is incredibly slow, writing to an NFS mounted volume should still be a lot faster than tape. If your network is already at saturation point then trying to ship your archive logs accross it will be slow. But, if your network is that saturated you've probably got serious problems anyway. It's a money question again. Can you get your management to pay for the remote storage and network capacity to ensure the recoverability of your systems in event of a disaster to your satisfaction? If you can't then you're probably going to have problems. Recoverability means business continuity.
