If you are in the habit of "taking the db out of archivelog mode" arbitrarily, then it is likely that the database is in an unrecoverable state much of the time even after you re-enable it.

I agree. It sounds like a complete waste of time. I wish you continued good fortune (the gods have obviously been smiling because you are *still* doing this) and I wish you luck and perseverence when they decide a little fun is in order and Mr Murphy comes to visit...
