There is a good paper about memory management on vldb 2002 "SQL Memory Management in Oracle9i" by Beno=EEt Dageville and Mohamed Za=EFt that explains how automatic memory management works.

You can also read "If Your Memory Serves You Right..." by Richmond Shee.
