It sounds like this is probably a question for the networking gurus at the company. Fortunately I didn't badly need the installer working today. I really appreciate your help in confirming that is wasn't just something simple.

if you are being a router and the unix box isnt, then it doent matter what os it is or anything, the unix box just cant see your pc.

Use an ssh tunnel with X11 forwarding enables, all x traffic will then go through your tunnel to you pc. All you need is an x server on you pc (cygwin, xwin, exceed etc.)
