The error is:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.InternalError: Can't connect to X11 window.

Nope, can't ping that IP address. I'm guessing because it is behind the router. Am I out of luck, or is there a way to route around the router?

I haven't run xhost + on this server. What I've done is start up the CDE environment on the laptop.

can the unix box see that IP address, i.e can it ping it - do you have an server running? did you run xhost + on the server?
