Hey Scott,
What was in the .aud file? Each object imported/exported, or rows, or what? Do you have AUDIT statement(s) set? And what do you have the init.ora param AUDIT_TRAIL set to?

I can think of one:

If you implement audit_sys_operations=TRUE in 9i (per security requirements, etc), you can end up with some _HUGE_ .aud files. Had this one bite us when we upgraded to 9.2.0.5.
