Thanks for the replies. Yes Im looking for a more graceful "extended" death <g>

Anyway, a fellow here suggested secure NetTerm http://www.securenetterm.com/ Ive installed here at home from windows to the Linux box and its pretty nice. Seems to have what you need as far as SSL, type of terminal emulation, setting how certain keys behave etc. Overall it works well and seems to do the job, the program has a 60 day trial and 1-5 license of $29 which I think is justifiable.

As far as Cygwin http://www.cygwin.com/ I installed it about 2 years ago and at the time, the coding did not seem complete, certain behaviors (which I was interested in) were not available or noted as bugs. Im sure it has matured by now but from what I remembered it took quite a bit of effort to get everything installed and configured to use it effectively, from what I remember all the bins were separate packages and were installed and configured independently. Im sure if I had to set up several workstations I could configure one machine and ghost the rest but I was looking for something somewhat "out of the box". Im not sure if companies would install and configure Cygwin on their clients desktop as its not "out of the box"/ "unsupported" software.

Also, as Mark pointed out Services For Unix http://www.interopsystems.com/downloads.htm seems interesting albeit probably similar to Cygwin. When I have some time I may try it.

Looking ahead, Im wondering about the VNC's http://www.tightvnc.com/screenshots.html http://www.realvnc.com/what.html
are all options for a GUI interface to a Linux/Unix server (depending on company policy + the SA)

So my summation is that "most" dbas in corporate America use MS windows for their workstation, with a austere interface to the server eg some flavor of dressed up telnet, to write, run and schedule scripts, rename or find files, grep log files etc

Im wrong or incomlete in my understanding, please feel free to enlighten me. Thanks for all the replies!
Bob
