In v$transaction, both PHY_IO & LOG_IO are available. Would I be correct to say that the LIO value is the count that gets satisfied from within Oracle BD_BLOCK_BUFFERS and PHY_IO is the count that get satisfied by calls to the OS?

Realizing the PHY_IO could actually be satisfied from "cache" and NOT require a honest to goodness, real physical I/O operation. Yes?
