You have asked question on conceptual level.
I haven’t answer to the question.

But I would like to share our experience.
We are trying to keep one oraInventory directory per ORACLE_HOME.
When installation is done, then we moving oraInventory to secure place.
In case we need to patch particular OH, we moving oraI back.
.
The reasons for so complex staff are
- to keep OH independent as possible
- in case of problems with oraI only one OH is involved
.
It is seems not correct one method for Oracle installations maintenance,
but it is very practical. Especially have knowledge how reliable OUI can
be.
