with RMAN (10g) you can indeed convert Oracle datafiles from little to big endian format and vice versa, and 10g data files are now platform-aware. this is meant for the cross-platform transportable tablespace feature, though -- I am not an RMAN expert, so I don't know how this affects RMAN DUPLICATE ...
