We are using OFA for years.
There are ~100 databases on 20 servers here. Development/Education/Testing/Production etc. Just 2-5 (depends on vocations, work in projects etc.) DBA-s how are supporting this staff.
.
I can’t imagine how to manage environment like described above without OFA and IT standards.
OFA not just about spindles and physical devices (I don't care so much about it in development env.),
as far I understood. It is software installation and DB files allocation standard.
.
Because of strong standard usage I don’t care how created this particular database.
I already know almost everything about files layout, before I even connect to server.
And I enjoy it very much.
.
I have been involved into some troubleshooting for external customers. And there were tow different typical situations: 1. OFA onsite: 5 min for look around and some time for troubleshooting. 2. MESS: Lets call DBA; DBA on vocation; Lets take a look. What the mess! Booting time 0.5-2 hours for get to understand the background idea of local DBA …
.
.

the information to those who need it.
Robyn, have you public available description of standards you are using? .
OFA have some basic description of files layout (have been described in some book of Oracle documentation in appendix, as far as I remember), but it can be extended.
.
What is your preferred description of OFA? .
Thanks in advance,
Jurijs
