Newbie RMAN duplication question

I'm just starting to use RMAN; better late than never.

I'm hoping to "duplicate" a V8.1.7 DB from one Solaris box to another.
I was hoping to avoid using an recovery catalog database; but I'm not sure if one is required or not.

RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
RMAN-03013: command type: Duplicate Db
RMAN-06172: not connected to recovery catalog database
The line above is true since I have no recovery catalog DB. The only example in the V8.1.7 manual shows a step to connect to the recovery catalog DB, and is silent on the use of controlfile catalog.
The Freeman book on 9i RMAN implies that one can duplicate using a controlfile catalog, but recommends against it.

Is my only reasonable course of action to create a recovery catalog DB?

Could I use V9.2 RMAN to duplicate between a pair of V8.1.7 systems?

TIA!
