Mark,

A partition will reside in a tablespace and many partitions can reside in the same tablespace so there is no correlation between the number of partitions and the number of datafiles.
I've never tried to reach the documented 64K-1 limit myself but have had over 1000 (3 years * day) runnning quite happily.
