We had to shutdown abort every time we needed to take down one of our databases at the last place I worked. You should be ok with what you want to do, but I would suggest a shutdown abort, startup restrict, shutdown immediate, and then do your work. That way you can separate the two actions. During the startup restrict, we would also use a different parameter file that used a smaller SGA size and a startup of 20 reco processes. This was in 8.0.5, so I am not sure what might have changed with the reco processes during the current releases
